Derek is blind. He is 6-9 years old and white (as this is based on a true story.) Talented, temperamental, detached.

Born prematurely in 1979, Derek barely survived a traumatic childbirth. He is blind and autistic. At a very young age, his family discovered that he had an incredible knack for music and introduced him to the piano. But his talent for music wasn’t enough – it would take a dedicated piano teacher like Adam to figure out how to break through to him.
